Language Arts
What are we learning?
In our new unit, we will be focusing on analyzing characters within fiction texts and writing personal narratives.
- In reading, we will follow characters and develop ideas about how and why characters grow and change by noticing what they say and do and using our own experiences to understand how they feel.
- In writing, students will learn to get ideas for stories by thinking about true stories that happened to them.They will be working on using their brainstorm of ideas to draft many different stories!
Home/School Connection
Encourage your child to talk about the characters in stories they read! You may ask:
- Who is your favorite character? Why?
- What would you have done if you were the character
- Why do you think the character______________?
- How would you have felt if you were the character?
Math
What are we learning?
- We are continuing to build our math community and our math routines.
- We will begin to develop an understanding of the base-ten numeration system and place-value concepts.
- We will are continuing to develop fluency with basic addition facts and the related subtraction facts
Home/School Connection
- Try creating counting collections at home!
- Collect buttons, acorns, coins.
- Then have your student count out the objects creating different groups.
Science
What are we learning?
- Students continue to understand that plants and animals undergo a series of orderly changes as they grow and develop.
- Students will investigate and understand that weather patterns and seasonal changes affect plants, animals and their surroundings.
Home/School Connection
- Ask your child about the 4 life cycles of the butterfly. We have witnessed all 4 in class.
- Have your student create a journal and observe a tree in your neighborhood. Keep drawings and notes of the changes that will occur in the next month or two!
Social Studies
What are we learning?
- We are continuing to build our social studies community. Students are continuing to learn how to be good citizens and follow classroom rules and routines that improve school and community.
- We are going to start learning about the different continents and oceans. The students will learn how to use maps and/or globes to locate the seven continents and five oceans.
Home/School Connection
- Please continue to discuss different rules you have at home and how each rule shows respect towards all your family members.
- Discuss some community rules that we all follow to help and improve our community/neighborhood.
