Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • We will begin our study of the interesting genre of fantasy.
  • Students will read and listen to fantasy stories and learn the common elements. 
  • Later in the unit students will write their own fantasy short stories.
  • We will wrap up our narrative nonfiction writing with  careful revision and editing.

Home/School Connection

  • There are many good books and book series related to fantasy: Harry Potter series, Wings of Fire series, Percy Jackson series, Story Thieves series, The Hobbit series, Mr. Lemoncello's Library series, The Giver series, The Map to Everywhere series, and Roald Dahl books, to name just a few.
  • What kind of fantasy do you watch on TV?
  • What are some of your  favorite fantasy books or stories? 

Math

What are we learning?

  • Grade five math will work with adding and subtracting with fractions with like and unlike denominators.  We will be working to build number sense related to combining fractions. Students will understand how to combine (add) and separate (subtract) fractions that have different sized pieces (denominators).  We will use real life problems and pattern blocks to build student understanding.  
  • AAP math will begging working with understanding and plotting data on  the Coordinate plane

Home/School Connection

  • Do some kitchen math with fractions, add and subtract fractional parts of pies, brownies, and a sandwich. 
  • The kitchen is a great place for research into fractions.  Recipes off many opportunities for kids to learn about fractions and combining fractions.  
  • STMath has many puzzles for students to master regarding fractions.  STMath helps students build the number sense needed to understand how fractions can be added and subtracted.
  • Have you ever made a garden or built a patio? How might a  grid help organize the space?

Science

What are we learning?

  • We will learn about the various layers of the ocean and the characteristics of each layer.
  • We will learn about the different animals and their special adaptations in each layer of the ocean.

  • Watch a documentary about your favorite ocean animal.
