What are we learning?

Learning About Print through Research

  • How often have you seen students rush for the basket of shark books to find out even more about their favorite, Great Whites? Have you heard the chorus of excited shouts when students discover a book that teaches them all about how cars work? Students instantly see themselves as experts and are eager to share their new discoveries with others. This unit supports students in using their current knowledge and curiosity to inspire their research. Students learn that researchers approach research with questions in mind. As students narrow in on a topic they are curious about, they carefully think about what their readers might want to know and what important information they want to share.
  • As students sort through all of the information they gather, they start to analyze it with a critical lens. They ask themselves, “What information is important? What information should I leave out? What information is accurate and what do I need to change?” Students are empowered to use the learned information purposefully in order to share it and teach others. Students synthesize the information and think about the best way to organize it.
  • Building upon the previous nonfiction unit, students experiment with different organizational structures and text features to communicate information in meaningful ways.

Home/School Connection

  • Check out your local library and look for some books on a topic your student is interested in!

Math

What are we learning?

Data Analysis

  • In this unit, students pose questions and then collect, organize, represent, read, analyze, and interpret data to answer their questions. They use various forms of data collection such as counting and tallying, conducting surveys, making observations, and voting. Tables, picture graphs, and object graphs are used to display the collected data.

Home/School Connection

Have your student conduct a survey with your family or neighbors!

Science

Home/School Connection

  • Go outside with your student and take note of any changes happening in your neighborhood!
