Hi Families!

We hope that everyone had a relaxing Spring Break; it was much deserved for both students and families! We are now heading into the 4th Quarter and the team would like to remind families of the academic expectations for the end of Kindergarten:

By the end of Kindergarten:

Language Arts

Math

Students should be able to:

-Write their first and last name

-Know the letters in their name

-Identify ALL uppercase and lowercase

-Write all uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet

-Know letter sounds

Students should be able to:

-Orally count to 100 (by ones and tens)

-Identify numerals 0-20

-Write numerals 0-20

-Count a group of objects with 20 or less

-Recite days of the week and months of the year in order.

If you are concerned about any of the above areas, please reach out to your student’s teacher. We appreciate the partnerships at home and how hard each family is working to accomplish these goals.

Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • Readers begin to think and respond to others’ ideas.
  • Readers think about what the author wants them to learn.
  • Readers make connections among characters across stories.
  • Writers will add details with words.

Home/School Connection

  • Begin to ask your student if they agree or disagree with what the characters do in the story? Why do they agree or disagree?
  • When reading stories with your student, point out what the author is trying to teach them. For example, if a character is trying to ride a bike and continues to try even though they fall, the author may be teaching us determination.
  • After your student draws a picture, remind them to add details! Take it a step further and see if they can add detailed words (big, small, pink, striped, etc).

Math

What are we learning?

  • Students will learn how to identify the number before a given number.
  • Students will learn how to sequence numerals forward and backward.
  • Students will learn to share things equally.
  • Students will learn about the parts and whole of numbers.

Home/School Connection

  • How old are you?
  • What age comes after that? What age comes before that?
  • Can you figure out those same questions for someone else in your house?
  • Draw a sandwich. Draw how you would cut it to share with someone, fairly!

Science/Social Studies

What are we learning?

  • Students have been learning about objects that sink and float and their characteristics.

Home/School Connection

  • Try filling a bucket outside and experimenting with objects to see what sinks and what floats. Make predictions before you test each object. Was your hypothesis correct?
  • Discuss the characteristics of the objects that sank/floated. What do they have in common?

Class Compliments

  • Mrs. Bender and Mrs. Santoro would like to shout out Josephine and Christopher! They have been working really hard on making their work neat and complete. They are always double checking the work they do to see how they can make it better!
  • Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. T’s class uses active listening skills during our show and tell on Fridays.  Last week, students started asking clarifying questions to the sharer.  Great work, kindergarten friends!
  • Miss Matthews and Mrs. Dillon would like to  shout-out their entire class!  You are now officially K ¾ and we are so proud of all that you have learned so far this year!  Keep it up!
  • Mrs. Nieto and Mrs. B’s class has been making great connections to the characters in the books we read! Students have been identifying the character’s feelings and thinking about a time they experienced something similar. You’re on your way to becoming great readers!

POG/Positivity Project

  • Positivity Project (P2) for the week of April  12-16 is fairness
  • Positivity Project (P2) for the week of April 19-23 is Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence
  • Portrait of a Graduate (POG): All of Terraset Elementary is working on being Collaborators. Kindergarten is focusing on sharing our ideas.

Home/School Connection

  • Spring is a great time to get outside and appreciate the beauty all around us!
  • Play games with your child and practice taking turns.  It’s okay for them to lose.
