Language Arts
What are we learning?
- We are enjoying our fantasy book clubs and will soon try our hand at writing fantasy short stories
- AAP is Debating this week, Which had a better form of citizenship, Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome?
Home/School Connection
- Notice the elements of fantasy in a story, tv show or video game
- What is effective when debating orally? Practice at dinner or in the car!
Math
What are we learning?
- AAP math is working on solving inequalities and graphing them on the number line.
- 5th grade math will complete our units on adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions this week
- 5th grade math will begin our unit on Expressions, Equations and Inequalities next week.
Home/School Connection
- Take notice of inequalities when out and about ( less than 15 in the grocery story for example)
- Cooking is a great way to practice fractions. In order to double a recipe practice multiplying fractions, eg. ¼ cup x 2 = 2/4 cup = ½ cup
- Ask your child to tell you equivalent fractions to those that are found in the recipe, eg. ⅓ cups = 2/6 cups, etc.
Science
What are we learning?
- We begin some review of fourth grade science by reviewing weather topics
Home/School Connection
- What kind of clouds do you see?
- Watch the weather news and talk about how cold and warm fronts can change our weather
Social Studies
What are we learning?
- In our unit on Ancient Africa students learned about the different climates of Africa, African trade and interdependence and contributions of African civilizations.
- This week we will learn about the Ancient Greek civilization and the contributions made by the ancient Greeks.
Home/School Connection
- Ask your child to share about the salt/gold trade in Africa and how the interdependence of civilizations on one another through trade.
- Ask your child about contributions made by the ancient Greeks.
