Are you in a book club? Explain how your group works and talks about the novels selected.
Ask your student what book they are reading, and ask about the setting for the story.
Ask what the character in the story is learning and how the character changes throughout the story.
Math
What are we learning?
AAP math will be diving into an algebra unit this week
Fifth grade math is working on fraction computation. We will be adding and subtracting fractions and multiplying whole numbers by fractions.
Home/School Connection
Where do you see unknowns( variables ) around the home or town? For example, make note of the check out line, “less than 15 items”.
Adding and subtracting fractions can be reinforced with a ruler. Adding 3 ½ inches and 4 ¾ inches will add up to how many inches?
Discussing fractions around the house is important. Recipes are great ways to discuss fractions and combine fractions. Show what a ½ cup of milk or a quarter cup of butter looks like. Compare these to a whole cup.
Recipes can also be used to modify measures. If the recipe calls for ½ cup of milk and you are doubling or tripling the recipe, how many cups do you need?
You can also discuss what the measurements would be if you only wanted to cook half the recipe.
Social Studies
What are we learning?
AAP will begin a DBQ analysis of Greece and Rome , they will address the question” Which had a better form of Governing?”
Fifth grade will be learning about ancient African cultures. We will learn about the geography and the effect the geography had on their culture, trade, and contributions to the rest of the world.

Discuss different forms of government and the rights we have as citizens.
You can discuss with your student how the geography of Africa affected their relationship with the rest of the world.
You can ask how the different kingdoms satisfied their needs and wants.
You can ask about their resources and how they used those resources to trade with other civilizations around the world.
