Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • Students will understand that the meaning of a poem is constructed by the poet and the reader interacting with text. In order to uncover the deeper meaning of a poem, students weigh the author’s perspective with their own perspective.
  • Students will understand that poetic tools reveal images, evoke feelings, and produce sounds to create a message for the reader to interpret. 
  • Students are completing their final draft of their Fantasy writing.

Home/School Connection

  • Read poems together as a family
    • What do you notice and wonder about the poem?
    • What are the feelings/mood of the poem?
    • What do you think is the poet’s message?

Math

What are we learning?

  • Students will explore the language of algebra as they learn the meaning of a variable and apply this understanding to the translation of patterns, models and story contexts to algebraic expressions and equations. 
  • AAP math students will begin to discover and understand proportions

Home/School Connection

  • Create story problems with an unknown value and replace a variable with the unknown value in order to  create an equation. 
  • Equation example: 35 + x = 104

Science

What are we learning?

  • Students will begin to study the basic characteristics of light, the colors of the visible spectrum, and how light travels.

Home/School Connection

  • Use mirrors to understand the reflection of light
  • Notice light reflecting, refracting, and transmitting in everyday life activities

Social Studies

What are we learning?

  • Students finished their study and research of Ancient African and Ancient Greece culture

  • How have Ancient African and Greek inventions/geography impacted our culture today?
