Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • AAP is starting book clubs! 
  • Students are learning to become stronger nonfiction readers 
  • Students are understanding their power as readers to read and determine their position on a topic 
  • Students are working on their narrative nonfiction pieces where they are becoming experts on an ocean animal and informing their reader of their animal on a narrative structure

Home/School Connection

  • Talk about favorite books you are enjoying, what genre do you enjoy and why 
  • What is your ocean organism? 
  • Describe the setting of your ocean organism’s habitat
  • What does bias mean?

Math

What are we learning?

  • AAP math has begun our study of integers.
  • General Education Math has discovered the purpose of using Order of Operations to solve problems with more than one operation. We continue to practice multiplication and division strategies to solve single and multi-step problems.

Home/School Connection

  • When watching sports or looking the weather take note of positive and negative numbers
  • “I make a batch of 56 brownies and share among 8 friends. How many brownies will each friend get?” 
  • “If I read 17 pages of my book each day, how many pages will I read in 2 weeks (14 days)?

Science

What are we learning?

  • AAP-We are working on Mind Maps to wrap up our study of the oceans

Home/School Connection

  • Ask you student to show you their map, it should be paper pencil and have some color and objects, not just words. 

Social Studies

What are we learning?

  • The students are actively engaged in researching a topic related to the Ancient Culture of China. Next they will share as subject experts and teach their classmates. 
  • Next, students will start their first DBQ in 5th grade! Students will analyze multiple documents to determine if Ancient Greece or Rome had the best system of citizenship.

Home/School Connection

  • Look around the house, what might you have from modern China? Discuss how the object might relate to Ancient China.
