Language Arts

What are we learning?

As we begin our research unit, students are learning to:

  • Explore a variety of texts, wonder about topics that are interesting to them, and select one topic to take through the research process.
  • Consider  what they know about a topic and determine what else they want to learn.
  • Read multiple sources to collect information.
  • Ask questions and revise their thinking as they learn new information.
  • Make decisions about how to take notes.

Home/School Connection

Engaging Your Child in Literacy at Home

Here are some ideas to keep your child engaged in literacy at home.

  • Play word/letter related games (hangman, crossword puzzles, Boggle, Scrabble) and encourage your child to read board game directions.
  • Encourage your child to keep a  journal. They could  write about outdoor play experiences and day trips or observe nature  and draw and write about what they see.
  • Help your child record an audiobook! Before recording, your child can  read the book (or chapter) to you a few times and experiment with changing the voices of the characters or the way they use expression while reading. After recording your child can send it to a loved one!

Math

What are we learning?

  • We will be starting our time and money unit!
    • We will work on counting and comparing a collection of coins whose total value is $2.00 or less.
    • We will work on telling time to the nearest 5 minutes on an analog and digital clock.
    • We will work on identifying dates.

Home/School Connection

  • Have your student count coins at home!
  • Have your student skip count off different numbers.

Science

What are we learning?

  • ● plants are important natural resources and can affect the development of geographic areas

     ● plants are used by many animals for oxygen, homes, shelters, and food

    ● humans can have positive and negative impacts on habitats and the plants and animals living there

Home/School Connection

  • We will be visiting Walker Nature Center on May 12th for Ms. Dore and Ms. Edwards’ classes. Mrs. Gregston’s and Ms. Baginda’s classes will go on May 26th. The students will observe animals in their natural habitats.
