Language Arts

What are we learning?

As researchers, students are learning to

  • Read multiple sources to collect information.
  • Ask questions and revise their thinking as they learn new information.
  • Identify important information that answers their questions.
  • Make decisions about how to take notes.
  • Use their own words when writing about their research topic.

Home/School Connection

There are 2 types of questions: “in the book” questions and “in my head” questions. The “in the book” questions have factual answers that can be found in books directly. The “in my head” questions are questions we think of while reading about a topic and are interesting to talk about. They are the true wonderings and relate more to the author and readers’ ideas about the topic. We are hoping that children will come up with a mix of these questions for their research projects, and you can help by talking about books or topics with these two types of questions in mind!
