Language Arts
What are we learning?
In our realistic fiction unit students are learning to:
- Consider the lessons characters are learning by thinking about how characters change and the mistakes they make in stories
- Reflect on their own experiences and make connections with the problems, actions, and lessons learned by characters
Students are also learning to write realistic fiction stories! They are learning to:
- Get ideas for realistic fiction stories by thinking about problems that happened to them or problems they notice in realistic fiction books
- Invent realistic fiction characters that are like themselves or people they know
- Plan important parts of their story using a story mountain
- Include character’s thoughts, feelings, dialogue, and actions
Home/School Connection
Encourage your child to talk about the characters in stories they read! You may ask:
Who is your favorite character? Why?
What would you have done if you were the character?
Why do you think the character______________?
What lesson did the character learn?
How did the character’s feelings change?
Math
What are we learning?
- We will be revisiting previous skills of addition and subtraction in unit 7!
- We will continue to work on estimating sums and differences
- using various methods to solve a problem.
- how to solve single-step and two step problems involving addition and subtraction.

Science
What are we learning?
- We have begun our lessons on Force and Motion.
- Students will explore how direct contact forces and noncontact forces cause motion, which can solve problems and be useful in everyday lives.
- -students will be skilled at explaining how forces can cause an object to change its motion.
- -students will differentiate between contact and noncontact forces causing motion.
- -students will identify examples of the effect of gravity causing motion.
- -students will investigate the effect of magnetism on the motion of other magnets or metal objects.
