Language Arts

What are we learning?

Our next unit of study is poetry! In our first weeks studying poetry, students  will be:

  • Making connections to poems
  • Using expression and pace to show the mood of a poem
  • Reacting to language, imagery, and experiences told through poetry
  • Writing free verse poems
  • Using techniques and tools to bring out what’s important or the meaning of the poem such as repeated lines, words, white space, and line breaks

Home/School Connection

Poetry allows children the opportunity to explore and have fun with words, write about what really interests them, and express themselves!

Here are a few  ways to explore poetry at home:

  • Read poetry by a variety of poets. Many popular poets (such as Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky) have their poetry online. You
  • Read and reread each poem. The first few times, you might want to be more expressive and rhythmic and see if your child can feel the rhythm, perhaps my tapping their feet to the beat! For other readings, ask your child to notice what the poet has done and share  what they like about it and  how the poem makes them feel.

Math

What are we learning?

  • We are returning to  some math skills from earlier units:
    •  We will read, write, and identify the place value of each digit in a three-digit number.
    • Identify the number that is 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, and 100 less
    • Work on continuing patterns
  • Start new topics:
    • We will identify time
    • Count and compare value of money up to $2.00

Home/School Connection

  • Get creative and make counting collections! You can use pasta, stickers, legos, etc.

  • Students will explain why we honor and celebrate major holidays with a specific focus on Presidents Day
  • Students will recognize the ideas and innovations of American leaders and how these leaders continue to impact us today

Home/School Connection

  • Discussion Questions for you at home:

    • How do the contributions of people help others?
    • How do the contributions of some American leaders still impact people today?
