Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • Becoming Readers and Writers
  • Learning About Print within Fiction Texts
  • Phonics focus is still beginning and ending blends.  Our focus this week is on ending blends (-ct, -ft, -nt, -xt, -pt, -st; -lp, -lk, -lf, -ld; & -nd, -sk, -sp, -mp,-nch).  Next week is on ending blends (-ang, -ing, -ong, -ung; & -ank, -ink, -onk, -unk).

Home/School Connection

  • When reading, ask your student to describe how their character has changed throughout the story.
  • Ask your student to use known parts of a word to read. Example:
    • The word is “cats” ask your student if there are any other words they know inside of the word “cats”
  • Phonics at home can be creating a chart with words that end in the blends noted by group.  Phonics game:  Pictionary - draw a picture of a blend word for your student to guess (ex: jump, nest, hand, or tent, etc.).

Math

What are we learning?

  • Counting and Numbers
  • Adding and Subtracting (Part 1)

Home/School Connection

  • Build understanding of equality by showing your student two groups of (concrete) objects and ask are they the same amount (make sure they can answer yes and no with different amounts)?  If you created different amounts, have your student tell you how many in each group.  Have them also use more or less vocabulary.  Then ask your student how you can make the groups the same amount.
  • Example:  Do I have the same number of blue bears as pink bears? • Which set has more bears? • How can you change it to make them the same?

Science

What are we learning?

  • Students are introduced to the Design a Park PBL challenge for the unit exploring examples of outdoor spaces from around the world. Students join teams to design a park at school or in the community. Students generate Need-to-Know questions.

Home/School Connection

  • Use nature walks to help discuss what students observe with senses (see, hear, feel, and smell).
  • Ask questions or generate conversation about plants, trees, weather, shelter from weather, birds & animals, needs of plants and animals.
  • Ask:   Why are parks important?  How do all people interact with nature in parks?  What natural resources are found in parks? How can people affect parks?  How do seasons and weather affect your park?
