• Kindergarten artists are exploring organic and geometric shapes
• First grade artists are learning about architecture and designing their own dream homes.
• Second grade artists are building 3-D animal sculptures.
• Third grade artists are experimenting with oil pastels as they draw celebration cakes.
• Fourth grader artists are making Surrealist drawings.
• Fifth grader artists are designing animal masks and making them out of cardboard.
• Sixth grade artists are creating characters based on themselves and drawing them  in comic book or anime style.

Music

In Mr. Andert’s music class:

K - Kindergarteners have been continuing to find their singing voices while playing the singing game “Pumpkin Stew.” We have also made movements like skeletons and monsters. Students are reading rhythms with quarter notes, two eighth notes and a quarter rest.

1st - First graders are continuing their introduction to xylophones. They are starting an autumn song called “Red, Yellow, Orange and Brown” which includes singing, movement and xylophone playing. 

2nd - The Second Graders finished up their xylophone song based on the story “Jack and the Beanstalk.” They performed for their homeroom teacher and special guests. They did a great job! 

3rd - The Third Grade students finished their xylophone piece called “Bobby Shaftoe.” They performed the melody on xylophone and then improvised a melody using a given rhythm. Also, students can now distinguish songs written in a major tonality versus a song written in a minor tonality. 

4th - Mr. Andert’s Fourth Graders are finishing up their xylophone piece this week entitled “Funga Alafia,” a folk song from Western Africa. The students learned three different xylophone parts. Now they are preparing a performance for their homeroom teachers and special guests. 

5th - Fifth Graders are continuing to learn a xylophone piece called “Ding Dong.” Students who attend small group music (students not in orchestra or band) learned a second accompaniment part to the song. We will put the parts together this week.

LTC

LTC students  have been working on their projects in Spanish per grade level.

Please ask your kid about it. 

• 2 ANIMALS AND FEATURES (animal movements and basic sentence structure using SWIM, WALK, RUN, FLY in Spanish)
• 3 INSECTS AND HABITATS (working on basic sentence pattern, I see +insec+color in Spanish  using our  Walking Gallery: GIANT INSECTS IN THE WORLD works made in computer slides )
• 4 METEOROLOGISTS (checking out our FLIPGRID recordings and working on place and Weather recognition in Spanish)
• 5 CONSTRUCTIONS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN (types of building in our community and describing them by color)
• 6 THE PLANET IS MY HOME (My favorite weather and places on our planet. Working on connector: Because)

Physical Education

In PE students are working on Throwing and Catching skills and will participate in activities and games that reinforce those skills. (Below is a list of games they may play)

• K-3 (Flip Hoop, Pin Elimination, Next up)
• Gr. 4-6 We are finishing up our fitness testing for the 1st qtr. Students will be assessed on the Pacer, Push-ups and Curl-ups in the next 2 weeks.  We will continue with throwing and catching activities. (Modified Football Games, Team Handball)

Guidance

The Kimochis program for grades K and 1st teaches the following:  self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making.  

Grades K & 1 will continue with Kimochis and next week grades 3, 4, and 6th will be discussing feelings and strategies for managing feelings.  

2nd grade will be going over worries and how to solve those worries again next week. 5th grade will be going over the SR&R again in more detail.

The Fish Bowl- Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd grades

Students celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by reading the story Mango, Abuela, and Me by Meg Medina.  Students displayed their observation skills by comparing and contrasting two homes in the story using a class size Venn diagram.  We also discussed the concept of culture and what their cultures’ look and sound like.  Students designed cultural flags and worked on writing captions to encapsulate their ideas. This week students are trying their hand at creating tangram puzzles in the spirit of Halloween.
