May 3-7 was teacher appreciation week.  Thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate! We feel very appreciated. 😊 It has been quite a year! We are also very appreciative of the amount of work families have had to do to help educate their children this year.

Thank you again!

From,

Miss Matthews, Mrs. Dillon, Mrs. Neito, Mrs. B(ordovsky), Mrs. Bender, Mrs. Santoro, Mrs. Johnson, and Mrs. T(ibrewala)

Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • Readers notice that poets see things in new ways.
  • Readers think about how a poem makes their feelings change.
  • Readers think about how poems can paint a picture in their minds.
  • Readers notice that poems can come in different forms and sizes.
  • Writers decide how the poem will look on the page.
  • Writers reread and think about how the poem would sound to the reader.

Home/School Connection

  • Ask students about the color poems they have been reading in class!
    • Can they think of any other words that would go with the following colors: red, blue, yellow?
    • Do the colors make them feel a certain way? (blue: sad, calm, etc)
  • We have seen some poems written in some very creative ways; can you think of a creative way to write a poem about waves?
  • Have your student practice reading a short poem with expression!

Math

What are we learning?

  • Students will  learn to share things equally.
  • Students will learn to use combinations for numbers up to 5 to help solve problems.
  • Students will  learn to use combinations for numbers up to 10 to help solve problems.

Home/School Connection

  • Draw 10 circles. Color some red. Color some blue.   Can you make a different combination?
  • Make up a math story and act it out with counters or illustrate it.

Science/Social Studies

What are we learning?

  • Students are learning about living organisms. We will be reviewing plant life cycles and observing seeds sprout.
  • Kindergarten will also be observing the life cycle of a butterfly. We have caterpillars now and will observe how they change throughout their phases.

Home/School Connection

  • Try planting some seeds at home and observing them as they grow.
  • Discuss what living things including plants and insects need to survive. How are these needs similar or different than our own needs?

Class Compliments

  • Mrs. Bender and Mrs. Santoro would like to shout out Harrison! Harrison pushes and challenges himself every day to become a better learner. He isn’t afraid to take chances and never gives up when he comes across something that seems challenging. Always keep looking for new topics to learn about!
  • Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. T’s class would like to welcome Leia, Baby Yoda, Luke, Darth Vader, and Rosa into our class.  We have 5 new caterpillar friends that joined this week!  Thank you Roman for your expertise in how to take care of these caterpillars. We will come to you if we have any questions!
  • Miss Matthews and Mrs. Dillon would like to give a shout-out to Alis.  Alis has been working incredibly hard to learn this year! She always raises her hand to participate, shows enthusiasm and tries her best even when it is difficult.  Way to persevere Alis!  You make us so proud!
  • Mrs. Nieto and Mrs. B’s class has really come together to create such a wonderful, inclusive class community. We love watching the fun they have together, especially at lunchtime and recess. Lots of laughs and smiles!

POG/Positivity Project

  • Positivity Project (P2) for the week of May 10-14 is Outro Week: Other People Mindset
  • Positivity Project (P2) for the rest of the school year will be any makeup of topics missed or important topics that teachers would like to revisit.
  • Portrait of a Graduate (POG): All of Terraset Elementary is working on being Collaborators. Kindergarten is focusing on sharing our ideas.

Home/School Connection

  • Make a Rainbow Words picture with your child.  Our words have the ability to change someone’s mood : good or bad. Write an example of how our words can put someone in a bad mood in a cloud and write examples of what we can say to help in each color of the rainbow.  Decorate and color to show our words can help brighten someone’s cloudy day.

Important Upcoming Dates
