  • Consider  what they know about a topic and determine what else they want to learn.
  • Read multiple sources to collect information.
  • Ask questions and revise their thinking as they learn new information.
  • Make decisions about how to take notes.

Spring Break Literacy Activities!

Here are some ideas to keep your child engaged in literacy through spring break.

  • Play word/letter related games (hangman, crossword puzzles, Boggle, Scrabble) and encourage your child to read board game directions.
  • Encourage your child to keep a spring break journal. They could  write about outdoor play experiences and day trips or observe nature  and draw and write about what they see.
  • Help your child record an audiobook!

Before recording, your child can  read the book (or chapter) to you a few times and experiment with changing the voices of the characters or the way they use expression while reading. After recording your child can send it to a loved one!

News from the Terraset Ambassadors:

Hello Terraset Parents and Families,

I hope this email finds you well. I am reaching out to you because there are people in our community in need and I believe you can help me make a difference in our community. The Terraset Elementary School Ambassadors and a team of teachers have arranged a mission called the TEG project, or the Terraset Elementary Generosity project. Our mission is to help families at Terraset and around the Reston area who are in need by collecting and distributing food, clothing, and gift cards. If you were able to help, your efforts would support families at Terraset Elementary and the surrounding communities of Reston. The school and community would greatly appreciate the donations, and this would show the Reston area that we are grounded in service, compassion, and unity. Our Terraset motto is ‘We See You, We Welcome You, You Belong Here’, and we would love to further show that Terraset Elementary and Reston in general is community focused and ready to assist those in need. Can you help us make a difference in the lives of so many?  If you have any questions or would like some more information, please contact the TEG project coordinator, Joseph Gayl, a call at 484-752-6100 or an email at [email protected]. This mission is on a large scale and cannot be accomplished solely by ourselves. Because of this, we need your assistance in raising money and collecting items to meet the needs of those in our school and the Reston community.

We will accept the following items-

  • Clothing
  • Shirts
  • Shorts
  • Athletic Clothing
  • Pants
  • Sweatshirts
  • Hoodies
  • Dresses/Skirts
  • Socks
  • Shoes
  • Light Jackets
  • Food
  • Canned Goods
  • Non-Perishable Goods
  • Miscellaneous
  • Gift Cards
  • Money Donations

These items can be donated between the set of doors near the front office, at the lower entrance of the school. You can drop off donated items on Mondays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Terraset Elementary is located at 11411 Ridge Heights Rd, Reston, VA 20191.  If you are donating clothes, there are a few extra steps to take. The clothing items must be washed, folded, and in a bag or a bin. Please make sure that the clothing is new or in good condition. We will be collecting clothing, food, and gift cards until Friday April 23rd! The donated items will be distributed the following Saturday May 1st. Whatever we collect will go to those in our community who need it the most! Thanks again for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon!
