Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • We are listening to and reading lots of narrative nonfiction texts to understand the unique genre.
  • We are learning the different nonfiction text patterns that authors use in their writing to share about topics.
  • We are learning to use background knowledge and context clues to make inferences while reading.

Home/School Connection

  • What is a topic you know a lot about that you would like to share with others?
  • What type of nonfiction text structure would you like to use to share your knowledge?
  • What makes narrative nonfiction different than general nonfiction?

Math

What are we learning?

  • We are demonstrating multiple representations of multiplication and division of fractions and mixed numbers.
  • We are solving single-step and multistep practical problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions and mixed numbers.
  • We are assessing our understanding of this unit on Monday, December 1.

Home/School Connection

  • How can you model and solve problems involving multiplication and division with fractions?
  • Encourage your student to use fraction strips and circles to solve problems.
  • Students will have the opportunity to complete an “error analysis” for their unit 2 assessment. This will allow students to look back at each question and break apart any answers they missed.

Science

What are we learning?

  • We are learning the various patterns of weather by studying the characteristics and properties of the atmosphere and how it changes altitude
  • We will be learning how atmospheric measures are used to predict weather conditions and use weather maps to give basic information about fronts, systems, and weather measurements.
  • Students will use the language of “cause and effect and analyzing” throughout the unit.

Home/School Connection

  • Students can read and analyze weather maps and explain any trends they see across the areas of Northern Virginia and compare local weather to another city in another state.
  • Students can create a poster depicting the layers of the atmosphere and their characteristics
  • Students can create a brochure explaining ways we can protect air quality
  • Students and families can work together to role play a weather report using recyclable materials to make props
