Language Arts
What are we learning?
We are in our nonfiction unit!
- Narrative Nonfiction - Students are engaging with the narrative arc while learning information about a topic.
- Narrative Nonfiction - Students understand that literary techniques reveal images and evoke feelings to enhance a message for the reader to interpret.
- Readers consider the perspectives of others to broaden their own thinking and conversations.
- Readers adjust their thinking based on how the author presents and organizes information in order to understand the information - we are learning about the different structures of nonfiction text, and how the structure supports the main idea
- While reading, readers consider nonfiction text features (titles, headings, captions, images, diagrams, etc.)
- As students read, they develop their own opinions about the topic based on pre-existing beliefs and new information they learn.
- Enjoy a good book over the break!
Home/School Connection
- Read holiday stories and poems, talk about the characters in a movie and how they are developed?
- Read a nonfiction book or website, do you notice facts or opinions?
- What is the relationship between nonfiction and the truth?
Math
What are we learning?
- AAP Math: We are revisiting adeeping our understanding of decimals. percentages , and fractions
- Gen Ed: Students are learning to multiply and divide multi-digit numbers and solve practical problems. After the break, students will be solving multi-step problems using Order of Operations
Home/School Connection
- Practice converting from one form to another, make not of percentage and fraction, or decimals at home.
Science
What are we learning?
- We have learned a lot about the ocean environment, the zones, the types or currents and how different animals live in the different zones.
- Students are understanding how our actions can positively and negatively impact the ocean ecosystem.
- Students are learning the geological features of the ocean floor, the characteristics of each ocean zone, and the types of animals that live in our oceans.

- Watch an ocean oriented movie or documentary
- Talk about ways we can help clean up our oceans
- What do you see at home that are solutions?
- What do you see at home that are mixtures?
