What are we learning?
- We are working on revising and editing our Historical Fiction pieces. We are using checklists to be sure that we have all of the required elements.
- We continue to use strategies to help with our comprehension. We are focusing on using Jot Thoughts to track our thinking.
- We are meeting in book groups to discuss our thoughts about the texts we are reading.
Home/School Connection
- Ask about the main character, the setting, and the conflict in your student’s historical fiction story.
- Find an article to read with your student, using jot thoughts to track your thinking, and then use the jot thoughts to help guide your discussion about the text.
- Inquire about the read aloud from class, and the main character is changing throughout the book.
Math
What are we learning?
- We are demonstrating multiple representations of multiplication and division of fractions and mixed numbers.
- We are solving single-step and multistep practical problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions and mixed numbers.
Home/School Connection
- How can you model and solve problems involving multiplication and division with fractions?
- Encourage your student to use fraction strips and circles to solve problems.
Social Studies
What are we learning?
- We are investigating the relationship between the West African Societies and the European explorers and their influence they have on trading resources.
- We are beginning to learn about the Early Colonies and identify what conditions led to the colonization of America.
- We will also be discussing the impact of the colonizations between African Americans, Native Americans, and new settlers from Europe.
Home/School Connection
- Using the Smithsonian Learning Lab Collection through this link, From Africa to the USA , analyze the artifacts of the artworks to learn characteristics of West African Societies and their connection to the United States. Use the strategy of See-Think-Wonder as you analyze the artifacts.
- Discuss with your student their thoughts of how did the European colonization of America impact Native Americans and enslaved Africans who did not come to the colonies by choice?

Concept: Patterns
Math
- Students will work to develop an understanding of and become fluent with solving expressions, linear equations and inequalities in one variable by applying the properties of real numbers.
Language Arts, Socials Studies and Science
- Patterns of Weather, Relationships, and Interdependence
- Patterns of human behavior have varying degrees of impact on Earth’s surface. With careful planning, the impact can be controlled. Scientists create models to develop or clarify explanations, demonstrate patterns, trends, relationships, and solve needs.
- Patterns have rules and relationships. Some things change in consistent patterns and some things change in changing patterns.
- Patterns are useful tools for making predictions. Patterns reflect the past and predict the future.
Home/School Connection
- How can we use patterns to show a relationship?
- What patterns can we find in literature?
- How do patterns of shared beliefs and values shape a culture?
- Why should we recognize patterns that exist in our world?
- How are algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalities represented in everyday life?
