Kindergarten Newsletter
March 9, 2021
Dear Families,
Happy March! Happy Spring!
The last 2 weeks have been very busy in Kindergarten! We had a great time celebrating the 100th Day of School with lots of fun activities. Some of our students also returned to school! Mrs. Bender and Mrs. Nieto welcomed their students to in person learning, while Mrs. Johnson and Miss Matthews students remained virtual. Whether in person or virtual we are still a team and are SO proud of all of our students!
This week we will begin a new schedule that was shared with you by your child’s teacher. This shift is occurring to accommodate the other students who are returning to school this week and in the upcoming weeks. Thank you for your continued support, patience, grace and flexibility as we work through yet another schedule change.
The Kindergarten Team
Language Arts
What are we learning?
- Readers will be able to explain what a nonfiction book is and what we use them for.
- Readers will begin to explore fiction books and determine its features.
- Writers will complete an All About Book on a topic of their choice.
- Writers will share their written pieces with others.
Home/School Connection
- Brainstorm topics that your student may know a lot about! Have them capture this knowledge on a piece of paper through pictures and words.
- Try learning about a new topic together by reading a nonfiction book. What did they find most interesting? Did this remind them of anything else they have learned about?
- Read your student’s favorite fiction book! Talk about what makes it their favorite.
Math
What are we learning?
- Students will learn how to count orally to 100.
- Students will learn how to group and count collections by ten.
Home/School Connection
- Find some beans or pasta. Can you make some groups of 10? How many groups of 10 did you make? How many do you have in all?
- How many people are in your house?
- How many fingers are there altogether?
Science/Social Studies
What are we learning?
- Students have been reviewing maps and geography.
- Students have been observing and reviewing weather patterns.
Home/School Connection
- Keep a weather journal at home and make daily observations. Is it rainy? Sunny? Foggy? Cool or warm? Try making a graph at the end of the month with your data.
- Ask your student about how the weather changes through each season.
Class Compliments
- Mrs. Bender and Mrs. Santoro would like to shout out Gabriel and Jules! There have been a lot of changes these past two week, but these boys have done a great job adjusting! They have shown a lot of hardwork and perseverance through tasks that may be more challenging. Keep up the good work Gabriel and Jules!
- Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. T’s class showed enthusiasm this week! Students have really enjoyed celebrating their learning and we have A LOT to celebrate.
- Miss Matthews and Mrs. Dillon’s Kindergarten Class had a wonderful week displaying the P2 trait of enthusiasm! We celebrated the 100th Day of School and are in awe of all they have learned and the people they are becoming. Way to go Kindergarten! Keep growing and persevering! You ROCK!
- Mrs. Nieto’s class has done SO well adapting to all of the new changes with returning to in person instruction. Students have been flexible as schedules and routines have changed.
POG/Positivity Project
- Positivity Project (P2) for the week of March 8-12 is social intelligence
- Positivity Project (P2) for the week of March 15-19 is love of learning
- Portrait of a Graduate (POG): All of Terraset Elementary is working on being Collaborators. Kindergarten is focusing on sharing our ideas.
Home/School Connection
- To help instill a love of learning and social intelligence, ask for your child’s opinion. It empowers children and models respectful listening. Try to avoid correcting, even if you know the opinion is wrong. Learning is about the journey, not a “correct” answer.
