Language Arts
What are we learning?
Students are learning to:
- independently follow the predictable structures and routines for reading and writing workshop and word study to maximize learning time and build a strong community as readers, writers, and word learners!
- explore a variety of texts, genres, authors, and forms to determine the types of books they love and figure out whether a book is just right for them.
- check on themselves to make sure they understand and think about what they read (e.g., rehearse, clarify, share).
- generate ideas for their writing and talk with others about their writing to develop their ideas.
Home/School Connection
We appreciate your support with making sure your child is reading 20 minutes each evening during the week! Students are working on building their reading stamina, so it may be helpful to divide that time into a few shorter reading sessions. Here are a few other ideas for encouraging reading at home!
- Plan reading time into your daily schedule. Some days your child might read independently or you may prefer to set aside family time for reading together!
- Talk about books! Spend time talking about the books your child is reading and the connections he/she is making or how he/she is feeling about different parts of the book they are reading.
- Get creative where and who they read to or with! For example, your child might like to read at the park, on the porch,, on a blanket in the yard, in the car, or with a flashlight under their bed! Or, perhaps they would have fun reading with a stuffed animal, a pet, a neighbor, or a family member on a video call!
Math
What are we learning?
- We are starting up our math community and building up our math routines.
- We will begin to develop an understanding of the base-ten numeration system and place-value concepts.
- We will begin to develop fluency with basic addition facts and the related subtraction facts
Home/School Connection
- Try creating counting collections at home!
- Collect buttons, acorns, coins.
- Then have your student count out the objects creating different groups.
Social Studies
What are we learning?
- We are starting and building our social studies community, and students are learning how to be good citizens by showing empathy, compassion, and respect for others. We have also been working on our classroom rules and routines that improve school and community.
Home/School Connection
- Discuss different rules you have at home and how each rule shows respect towards all your family members.
Science
What are we learning?
- Students will engage in investigations and observations to get a basic understanding of changes that occur with plants, animals, and their habitats.
Home/School Connection
- Fall begins on September 22nd. This is a great time for your child to observe changes outside. Butterflies are prevalent at this time. Have your child watch a butterfly in action and try to write down some interesting facts.
