What are we learning?

We are excited to begin our Persuasive Letter Writing unit.

Students will be learning to:

• Keep their audience in mind when writing persuasive letters
• Support their ideas with reasons
• Use the structure of a letter to communicate their message
• Elaborate their ideas by using a call to action or counter argument

In word study and shared reading we continue to:

• Explore long vowel patterns
• Search for a part of words they know to solve unknown words
• Notice punctuation and use pausing and intonation in their voice to reflect it.

Supporting Your Child with Choosing Topics

Our young writers always benefit from conversations with you to explore ideas for their writing! To support your child with determining topics for persuasive letter writing, these questions may help your child think of topics they feel strongly about:

• What matters to you most? 
• What would you argue for?
• What bothers you? 
• What would you like to change?

Letter writing is a great way to keep students engaged in writing in a purposeful way throughout the summer. As we work on letter writing skills in school, you can encourage  your child to get a head start on summer letter writing by writing to friends and family now!

What are we learning?

• We are learning about outcomes from an event and the chance that they will happen.
• We will continue learning to solve multi step addition and subtraction story problems.
• We will start looking at equality and inequality using pictures and equations.
