What are we learning?

We are in our last weeks of our research unit!

Students are learning to:

• Decide which structures and layouts will best show their learning
• Show their information in more than 1 way
• Seek feedback from peers to make their writing more clear
• Share and present their learning in an engaging way!

In word study and shared reading we continue to:

• Explore long vowel patterns
• Search for a part of words they know to solve unknown words
• Notice punctuation and use pausing and intonation in their voice to reflect it.

Supporting Your Child with Selecting Books

In order to progress as readers, students need multiple opportunities to read books at their independent reading level. Experts have discovered that even very young students can read for extended periods of time when they are matched with books that they can read with 95% or higher word accuracy rate, and they are more successful when reading books that interest them.

Here are some helpful and simple  criteria to help your child determine if a book is at their independent reading level:

1. I  like this book.
2. I can read most of the words.
3. I understand it. I could tell someone about it.

A great resource for finding books at their independent reading level is the Pioneer Valley Books Digital Reader! Please continue to encourage your child to read from their bookshelf at this site. Your child can easily access this from the Terraset Student Links page and use their FCPS Google Apps login information. 2nd grade teachers also have this in Reading and Writing Workshop links.  Students have their own bookshelf with books at their independent level. In addition, there is a book bag which includes books students have read during guided reading instruction. These books are at their instructional reading level.

Math

What are we learning?

• We will continue learning asynchronously about data and creating bar graphs.
• We will continue working  on multi step addition and subtraction problems.

• Students will investigate and understand that living things are part of a system. Key ideas include:
  • habitats change over time due to many influences
• The student will investigate and understand that plants are important natural resources. Key ideas include
  • plants can help reduce the impact of wind and water

• How can weather affect plant life?
• How do you see plants change throughout the year? From season to season?
• What plants do we see a lot in our neighborhood or community?
• How do we use plants in our daily life?

Social Studies

What are we learning?

• The student will describe important developments and innovations in the United States related to communication and transportation
  • Technology and innovations continue to grow and change over time. 
  • Some things change over time, while other things remain the same

• In what ways does technology change over time?
• In what ways do people share developments and innovations?
