Language Arts

What are we learning?

We have just started our new unit, Learning About Print Within Nonfiction.

Students are learning to:

  • Think about what they already know about a topic to prepare themselves to read a new book.
  • Ask questions and locate the information in texts
  • Use their knowledge about how the information in nonfiction books is organized and to figure out the big ideas of the text.
  • Connect new learning to their background knowledge to help them remember and understand

As nonfiction writers, students are learning to:

  • Think about topics they know a lot about so they can teach others what they want to learn or need to know
  • Decide what’s most important to teach their readers.

Home/School Connection

Here are some ways to support your child with reading and writing nonfiction.

  • Think about what your child is passionate about and look for nonfiction books about your child’s favorite things.
  • Make connections with what’s happening in their life. For example, if you are about to take a vacation, you can find books, maps or websites about where you are going and explore them together.
  • Consider the fiction your child likes to read and find nonfiction books to match. For example, if your child enjoys the Magic Tree House books like Midnight on the Moon, you can pair this with a nonfiction book about space.
