Language Arts

What are we learning?

As we continue our unit Learning About Print in Fiction, we will

  • Interpret messages that authors convey and discuss what we think about those messages.
  • Develop new ideas about books through conversations.
  • Use elaboration techniques to develop important parts of writing.
  • Notice when errors are made in reading and self-correct.
  • Take words apart efficiently and flexibly to support reading and spelling.

Home/School Connection

  • Encourage your child to share about the lessons characters learn in the stories they read and reflect together about the author’s message.
  • Continue to support your child with generating ideas for stories by encouraging him/her to:
    • Think of memories that spark interest (games, sports, food, first times/last times, mistakes, trips, pets, injuries,)
    • Think of a memory that gives them a strong feeling
    • Think of something he/she remembers well, even if it is something small (like eating breakfast or brushing their teeth that morning)

Math

What are we learning?

  • We will continue to learn to use place values by making multiple representations of two digit numbers (with and without models).
  • We will continue to learn to identify numbers that are 10 more 10 less.

Home/School Connection

If you notice a number (five apples, 20 rolls, etc) have our students practice the “crazy grid” activity: What would be 10 more than ____, 10 less than ____? One more than_____? One less_____?

Social Studies

What are we learning?

  • We will learn about and compare the lives and contributions of three American Indian cultures of the past and present with an emphasis on the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands.
    • We will talk about the geography, climate, environment and culture of the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodland
  • We will learn about natural, human, and capital resources specifically related to the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands
  • We will learn the meaning behind the celebration of Thanksgiving

Home/School Connection

  • We live in the area that the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands lived, and discuss how things in this area have changed and how American Indian cultures have contributed to our world today.
  • Discuss with students about the natural, human and capital resources that they see and use in their daily lives.
  • Talk about your traditions for Thanksgiving and how they might have started.

Positivity Project

What are we learning?

  • November 15th - 22th - Gratitude

Home/School Connection

Check out P2 for Families website: https://posproject.org/p2-for-families/

Use these discussion questions/topics to get students thinking about and talking about their experiences with expressing gratitude:

  • What we NOTICE in our lives for which we can be grateful:
    • What have you been given or what do you already have in your life that you are grateful for?
    • Is there a gift behind the gift you are grateful for, like someone thinking or caring about you enough to give you the gift?
    • Are there certain people in our lives that we can/should be grateful for?
    • Are there experiences you have had that you are grateful for?
  • How we FEEL about the things we have been given:
    • Does it make you feel happy to get this gift?
    • What does that feel like inside?
    • What about the gift makes you feel happy?
    • What about that person(s) makes you feel happy?
  • What we DO to express appreciation in turn:
    • Is there a way you want to show how you feel about this gift?
    • Does the feeling you have about this gift make you want to share that feeling by giving something to someone else?
    • Is there a way you want to show how you feel about that person(s)?
    • How can you show others you are grateful for them?
