Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • We are finishing up our Critical Literacy Unit this week and writing our Persuasive Essays. 
  • Next up is our non fiction unit focusing on t text features and text structure

Home/School Connection

  • Look at the non fiction in your home, it is all around. Cereal boxes, instructions on a dry food item, in the mail. Notice how the information is different from a story or novel.

Math

What are we learning?

  • We are wrapping up our unit on computation with whole numbers.  Students have practiced using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to solve practical problems.
  • We are learning to use Order of Operations to solve multistep problems
  • AAP math is moving into the fun world of integers . We will identify absolute values, opposite numbers and learn about positive and negative numbers.

Home/School Connection

  • Include your child in solving practical problems involving whole numbers as you encounter them as a family.
  • Ask your child about the order of operations and the steps to solve problems.
  • Keep track of the temperature here and in another city, how much different is the temperature?

Science

What are we learning?

  • Oceans Unit coming soon!

Home/School Connection

  • Ask students what they are know about Earth’s oceans

Social Studies

What are we learning?

  • We are learning about the cultures in Mesoamerica, including Olmec, Mayan, Incan and Aztec civilizations. Students are creating a poster or Google Slides presentation in project groups about 1 specific culture. 
  • AAP- we are finishing our study of Hamurabbi’s Code. We analyzed laws, wrote a persuasive essay and  next we will debate the fairness of the laws.

  • Ask your child about the culture they are learning about and its contributions.
  • What types of systems help your home operate? 
  • What rules are fair and not fair?
