Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • We are reading and learning the traits of narrative nonfiction, an interesting genre that blends story elements and facts.

Home/School Connection

  • Biographies are often written as narrative nonfiction.  Share an interesting biography together.

Math

What are we learning?

  • AAP math is exploring computation with positive and negative integers
  • Gen Ed: Students are learning to multiply and divide decimals.  We begin multiplying and dividing whole numbers by decimals.  We get them to understand that by multiplying by a number less than one, our product will be smaller. For instance, 4 x 0.5 = 2.  Then we will work with multiplying and dividing decimals by decimals.  While the algorithms work similarly as we multiply and divide whole numbers, it is important for students to realize how numbers are affected when using decimals.

Home/School Connection

  • Discuss positive and negative integers in real life ( 3 under PAR, loss of 10 yards, increase temperature, altitude, etc)
  • Practice multiplying or dividing money problems.  For instance: If we buy apples at $1.59 a pound, how much would it cost if we bought 4 pounds?  How much would it cost if we bought 0.5 pounds?

Science

What are we learning?

  • We completed a review of the Experimental Design Process by creating tin foil boats and recording how many pennies the boats could hold.
  • We are starting our Oceans Unit by talking about what the bottom of the ocean looks like. We will learn the 6 features of the ocean floor, learn what lives in each ocean zone, and discuss human impact on our Ocean Ecosystem.

Home/School Connection

  • Watch a marine oriented movie or documentary
  • Construct a model of the ocean floor
