Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • We are sharing our memoirs and working on grammar and punctuation skills
  • We are reading fiction and thinking about characters and Conflicts in the story
  • Our next unit will be persuasive writing and reading of persuasive text

Home/School Connection

  • Discuss the problem or conflict the main character faces in a movie or TV show, what steps do they take to overcome the problem

Math

What are we learning?

  • We just finished our unit on equivalent fractions and decimals and ordering fractions and decimals. 
  • We are beginning a unit on solving word problems with a focus in division.
  • AAP math is focusing on fraction computations and understanding of visual representations of the equation

Home/School Connection

  • Present your child with a real world problem that would require division and challenge your child to share different strategies they may use.
  • Challenge your child to convert those common fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions

Science

What are we learning?

  • We are wrapping up our “Landforms” unit over the next two weeks.  We have learned about the layers of the earth, plate tectonics to include earthquakes and volcanoes, and how to identify the different types of rocks.  Looking forward, we will learn about weathering and erosion and the impact on the rock cycle.  We will have a unit ending assessment on October 22. 

Home/School Connection

  • Look for examples of weathering and erosion in your neighborhood.

Social Studies

What are we learning?

  • We will begin learning about Mesopotamia and the Fertile Crescent on October 25.  Students will learn why people first settled in this area and the contributions the Sumerians made to the world’s cultures.

Home/School Connection

  • Families can discuss their cultures and compare them to the contributions of ancient Mesopotamia.
