Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • The next couple weeks will focus on reading and composing poetry.  
  • Students will use and interpret figurative language such as similes and metaphors and learn to use them in their own writing. 
  • After reading a poem students will discuss the theme and the meaning of the poem.

Home/School Connection

  • What is this poem mostly about? 
  • What are lines ____ mostly about?
  • Which sentence would be best to include in a summary of the poem?
  • What are you visualizing (picturing in your mind)?
  • What are you feeling?

Math

What are we learning?

  •  Determine common multiples and factors, including least common multiple (LCM)and greatest common factor (GCF)
  • Continue to order fractions with and without models including number lines and <,>,= symbols

Home/School Connection

  • Multiples are skip counting; practice skip counting with your student
  • Regularly have your student explore coins, an analog clock, and measuring tools as a habit
  • Explore measuring cups in relation to greater and less than

Science

What are we learning?

  • Students will explore how living and nonliving things interact in an ecosystem
  • After learning about ecosystems, students will learn how weather affects the ecosystem

Home/School Connection

  • How do weather and climate affect ecosystems?
  • What is the importance of plants in the ecosystem? 
  • How do the parts of the ecosystem interact?

Social Studies

What are we learning?

Make connections between Virginia geography and Native Peoples and Virginia ecosystems.

Home/School Connection

  • Ask your student about uses of natural resources you observe around Reston? What would natives of the area used in their daily lives?
