Language Arts

What are we learning?

As readers, students are learning to:

• Use their knowledge about how the information in nonfiction books is organized  to figure out the big ideas of the text. 
• Compare new information to known information to deepen understanding about a topic. 

 As writers, students are learning to:

• Use a variety of organizational patterns to teach their readers.
• Make thoughtful choices about ways to organize their information in their writing.
• Include illustrations that teach even more about the topic.
• During our word study instruction, students are reading, writing, and building words with abstract vowels including oi/oy, au/aw, all/alt/alk and ew.

Home/School Connection

Having conversations with your child about what he/she is reading can improve their nonfiction comprehension and help them develop critical thinking and language skills. Here are some questions to help you have great reading discussions with your child:

• What do you already know about this topic?
• Why do you think this topic is important?
• What new things did you learn?
• What are you wondering about?
• What else would you like to learn about this topic?
• What pictures or illustrations did you find interesting? Why?
• Is this book like any other book that you have read? If so, how are they alike? How are they different?

Math

What are we learning?

• We will be wrapping up our measurement unit with a marble challenge this week.
• Our next unit will have us revisit addition and subtraction! 
  • We will work on estimation of sums and differences
  • Two step addition and subtraction problems 
  • We will work on equality

Home/School Connection

Science

What are we learning?

Students are: 

• learning to identify and describe common storms
• Identify the precipitation associated with common storms
• Observing, describing, and recording daily weather data
• Learning about different weather tools

Home/School Connection

• Have your child record the temperatures and describe the weather in the next 5 days as they are home on break.
• Have them write about their observations and data. Do they notice a weather pattern?

Social Studies

What are we learning?

We are in our 3rd Unit in Social Studies!

• We will be learning about the Powhatan Indians' lives and culture.
• We will learn about how they built their homes and their different food sources.
• We will also learn about their contributions to present day life.
